I found noteflight to be a very powerful free notation solution. The samples are of high quality and the key shortcuts are comparable to those used in finale and sibelius making it easy to get comfortable with. This would be a powerful tool for music theory classes doing melodic dictation or creating compositions. Students could use school computers without needing special software. They can also transpose parts easily at home if they needed to.
